Keeping you up to date on all things Homewood Athletics!
Waldrop Stadium
A message from the Athletic Director
Dear Patriots Family,
Welcome to our monthly newsletter! We’ve had a great start to the '24-'25 school year, filled with remarkable achievements. I’m proud of our student-athletes for their hard work and dedication. As we continue to strive for excellence on and off the field, I encourage everyone to support our teams and show your Patriot pride at every game and event.

Over the summer and throughout the first two months of school, we’ve made significant progress in our sports programs, and I’m excited to share some updates with you that will help improve the player and spectator experience in Homewood. For example, if you need help at Waldrop Stadium during our football games, please find a member of our HHS Hospitality Team (wearing red polos each game) as we are more than happy to help you. We've also installed new NFHS cameras in both gyms at HHS, as well as HMS. This provides a more reliable and convenient way to watch our events from home if you can't attend in person. Our Sports Media class at HHS runs the cameras, highlighting our football team, cheerleaders, band, and even providing instant replays on Friday nights.

We are actively searching for ways to improve what we do, and our hope is that you will notice and appreciate these improvements. I am extremely proud to serve alongside a committed, caring, and dedicated coaching staff each day at Homewood High School. Let’s keep pushing forward and working together to make this school year incredible for all!
Go Patriots!

Alumni Spotlight- John Yarbrough
John is a 2015 graduate of HHS, where he played football, basketball, and played the trumpet in the Homewood Patriot Band. John says that he developed an incredible work ethic while at Homewood High School, which "set me up to be successful in life in so many ways". John earned a scholarship to the University of Richmond to play football, was a starter for 2 years, as well as a team captain his senior year. John credits his HHS teachers and coaches for preparing him and helping him get accepted to the prestigious business school at Richmond.
Upon graduating, John played 5 years of professional football, starting with the Carolina Panthers in preseason camp, and enjoyed a solid career in the XFL, and then Covid-19 hit. John is currently playing in the Canadian Football League, working as a mortgage broker in Fort Worth, Texas (certified in Texas, Ohio, and Alabama soon!), and even coaching football in the afternoons! After football season, he will take over as the head coach of the JV basketball team, pouring into kids in Texas that love sports just as much as he did in Homewood.
John is one of the all-time good guys to come out of Homewood High School- we are so proud of this young man, and love that he still visits and keeps in touch with teachers and coaches. Well done, John Yarbrough! We wish you continued success as you continue to impact those around you in so many positive ways!

Patriot Peer Connection Mentor Program (PPC)
We are excited to continue our Patriot Peer Connection program this year at HHS. In this program, each incoming freshman athlete is paired with an upperclassman in his or her same sport, and that mentor is responsible for periodically checking in on their athletes, as well as teaching them small lessons each month. These lessons include what it means to be a Homewood Patriot, balancing schoolwork with athletics, handling peer pressure, and the value of participating in athletics at Homewood High School. The program works as the current 9th grade "mentees" will develop in to upperclass "mentors" to mentor others as they grow and develop.

STAR Tutoring Program
We are proud to offer FREE tutoring for our student-athletes each Sunday and Thursday in the Fall. Students are encouraged to attend, and we have an excellent tutor/student ratio so athletes can catch up, study, or even get ahead as they balance their education with athletics. Athletic Facilities Update
We have had a busy summer and fall as we continue to upgrade our facilities in Homewood City Schools.
These updates include:
  • Finalizing construction at Waldrop Stadium. This project included the installation of a beautiful Video Board, enhanced locker rooms, brand new entrance gates, ticket booths, and the installation of LED lights.
  • In our gyms on campus, we installed new bleachers, shot clocks, LED lights, and new paint upgrades. This long-term project also completed updates to the locker rooms for the boys' and girls' basketball volleyball teams.
  • The Homewood baseball and softball teams will have new turf fields to play on this spring! The baseball field (infield only) has just been completed, and softball field should be completed by the end of October.
  • Our girls and boys soccer teams will get to enjoy their own space in updated locker rooms at Waldrop Stadium this spring.
We are incredibly thankful to the Homewood Board of Education for these upgrades, as our players, students, and fans will enjoy an updated and modern game experience.

Special thank you to our sponsors!
