Universal Free Breakfast for HCS Students

Homewood Families,
We are pleased to share that Homewood City Schools has been awarded the Alabama School Breakfast Grant. This supplemental funding, authorized under Act 2025-268, will allow us to provide free breakfast to all students starting this Friday, May 1, 2026.
This initiative is designed to support student health, well-being, and academic success by ensuring every child starts the day with a nutritious meal. We are excited to announce that this program will continue throughout the entire 2026–2027 school year, providing free breakfast to all enrolled students each school day.
Research consistently shows that students who eat a healthy breakfast are more focused, perform better academically, and have improved attendance. By removing barriers to access through this Universal Breakfast model, we aim to create an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
Program Highlights:
Nutritional Support: These funds help offset the costs of serving breakfast to all students, regardless of income eligibility starting in May 2026 through May 2027. We hope to receive this grant again, but we currently have funding for one year.
Alabama Grown: We are encouraged to use these funds to incorporate Alabama grown Farm to School foods into our morning meals.
Breakfast Includes Four Items: A whole grain entree, meat or meat alternative (yogurt or cheese), fruit or vegetable, and milk. Students must choose three items and one of the items must be a fruit or vegetable. Additional items beyond the four included will be charged to your student’s account.
As a reminder, our schools serve breakfast during these designated times:
Elementary Schools - 7:25 a.m. - 7:50 a.m.
Middle & High Schools - 7:15 a.m. - 7:50 a.m.
We hope your family will take advantage of this program beginning May 1st (this Friday) and continuing into the 2026-2027 school year. Thank you to our Child Nutrition Program, which works hard every day to provide nutritious meals to our students and ensures they start each morning with a healthy meal.
Sincerely,
Dr. Justin Hefner
Superintendent Homewood City Schools
