Chromebook Policy Update January 2025

Posted Date: 1/07/25 (10:00 PM)

We are excited to announce an important change to our technology environment that will improve our students' learning experience and ensure a safer, more secure academic setting. Starting January 2025, all students 9-11 will be provided with a school-issued Chromebook, which students will be required to use during school hours. Personal devices for grades 9-11 will no longer be allowed on campus. This change marks the transition from our current "Bring Your Own Device" policy to a “One-to-One” device environment.

Here’s why this change is important for you:

  • Enhanced Safety & Security: School Chromebooks are equipped with security features that help protect student personal data and ensure access appropriate content. These devices are set up to meet the district’s safety guidelines, which are vital for maintaining a safe, digital learning environment.

  • Focused Classroom Environment: By using school-issued devices, teachers will have more control and visibility over student Chromebook usage during class. This helps ensure that technology is being used effectively for academic purposes, rather than distractions. It also makes it easier allows teachers to support students with any technical issues they may encounter.

  • Consistent Access to Learning Tools: School Chromebooks will be pre-loaded with the tools and resources needed for all coursework. This consistency ensures that students have everything they need to succeed and that they won’t face compatibility issues that might arise from using different devices.

  • On-Site Technical Support: With all students using the same device, HCS can offer on-site technical support if any issues arise with devices. Loaner devices will be provided in case of accidental damage, and replacements will be issued for malfunctioning devices.

We understand that this change may take some adjustment, and we are here to support you through the transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Technology Specialist, Kristin Clark, at kclark@homewood.k12.al.us. We appreciate your cooperation as we work together to make this shift a positive step toward improving our learning environment.
